| Knockout | Mice deficient in membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase 1 display severe defects in skeletal development including dwarfism, osteopenia, and craniofacial abnormalities and delayed tooth eruption. Death occurs in these mice by about 3 weeks of age (Bartlett et al., 2003). There are also defects in lung development (Irie et al., 2005). Mice lacking gelatinase A as well as membrane-type matrix metalloproteinase 1 die immediately after birth (Oh et al., 2004). |
