Knockout	Suppression of expression of matrilysin by antisense methods has shown depression of invasive potential of cancer cells (Yamamoto et al., 1995; Miyazaki et al., 1999). Also, matrilysin knockout mice were dramatically protected from bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis (Zuo et al., 2002).
Pharmaceutical relevance	Drug target for prevention of pathological tissue damage. Research data suggest that matrilysin plays an important role in leukaemia cell invasion (Lynch & McDonnell, 2001).
