PhysiologyProduct of the e14 DNA element in some strains of Escherichia coli. e14 is a defective prophage that is integrated into the isocitrate dehydrogenase gene, and contains the lit gene. Acts in an 'exclusion system' that kills bacterial cells that are infected with T-even phages including T2, T4 and T6, preventing furhter replication of the phage. The transcription and translation of a short region of the major head coat protein gene late in phage infection activates proteolysis of translation elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu) by Lit protease, blocking translation and multiplication of the phage.
