Active site	The active site residues have been identified by site directed mutagenesis as Cys162 and His215 (Choi et al., 1991). There is conservation of a Gly-Tyr-Cys-Tyr motif between families C7 and C6 (see the Alignment).
Activities and specificities	The p29 peptidase is autocatylitically released during translation from the small polyprotein of the virus, cleaving a single GlyGly bond (Choi et al., 1991).
Inhibitors	Inhibitors have not been described.
Molecular structure	No structure is yet available for any peptidase in family C7.

Biological functions	The virus encodes two polyproteins, with the p29 peptidase found at the N-terminus of the smaller p29 polyprotein. The role of the p29 peptidase once it is released from the polyprotein is uncertain, but it has been demonstrated that the p29 peptidase contributes to the reduction in fungal pigment production, sporulation and laccase production caused by the hypovirus (Craven et al., 1993).
