Definition It is a thyroid hormone replacement medication which works by supplying the thyroid hormone normally produced by the body. It is used to treat the symptoms of hypothyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone) and is also used to treat goiter (enlarged thyroid gland). Desiccated thyroid extract is made from dried thyroid glands of animals, specifically pigs.
