The new Reactome Pathway Overview (codename: Fireworks) is a genome-wide, hierarchical visualisation of all Reactome pathways in a space-filling graph - and is integrated into the Reactome Pathway Browser.

Fireworks represents pathways as nodes, and the size of the node reflects the number of entities (e.g. proteins, small molecules, genes) belonging to that pathway.

The edges (lines) represent the connections between pathways in the Reactome pathway hierarchy.

Pathways at the uppermost level of the hierarchy are represented as a central node, surrounded by concentric rings of nodes that represent sub-pathways in the pathway hierarchy, projecting outwards from the central node until the lowest hierarchy level is reached.

When the graph loads, Fireworks automatically fits all pathways into the existing area. You can click and drag, and zoom using the mouse wheel. You can also use the navigation tool at the top-left of the display.

Fireworks offers an intuitive view of analysis results across all Reactome pathways, allowing a quick "first glance" with integrated focus onto interesting results. Following your data analysis, it colours nodes and edges based on the results (several colour profiles are available).

Further details on how to use and understand the Fireworks display can be found in the Reactome User Guide.

Fireworks code is available in github
