New PDBe entry pages: Interactive, personalised, and mobile-ready

Explore molecular structures with new interactive 3D viewers and AI annotations

The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe) has released a major update to the PDBe entry pages, offering a significantly improved experience for accessing experimental macromolecular structures for a wide range of users, from students and clinicians to machine learning specialists and structural biologists.

Built with extensive feedback from users and experts across the structural biology and other user communities, the new pages combine a cleaner interface with deeper insights and new interactive features.

What’s new?

  • Improved 3D viewers, annotations, and model quality tools
  • AI-based knowledge extraction: AI-mined, residue-level text annotations
  • User-uploaded annotations: contextualise your own insights to structure entries without leaving the browser
  • Fully refreshed layout for easier navigation and interpretation
  • Streamlined citation views: see not only what was published about the structure, but also who used it
  • Mobile-friendly design for use in the lab, classroom, or on the go

These updates aim to support everyone, from structural biology experts to data scientists and students, by making macromolecular structure data more accessible, easier to explore, and more contextual. For the programmatically minded, all data served on the pages are supported by open-access APIs to allow for integration into pipelines, custom analyses, and large-scale data exploration.

“We didn’t just redesign the pages, we reimagined how researchers interact with structure data and brought the 3D viewer to the fore,” said Jennifer Fleming, PDBe Coordinator at EMBL-EBI. “We’ve integrated new technologies, made the data easier to interpret, and added options for researchers to add their own data.”
