DefinitionA 17α-hydroxy-C21-steroid that is pregn-4-ene substituted by oxo groups at positions 3 and 20 and hydroxy groups at positions 11, 17 and 21. Cortisol is a corticosteroid hormone or glucocorticoid produced by zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex, which is a part of the adrenal gland. It is usually referred to as the "stress hormone" as it is involved in response to stress and anxiety, controlled by corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). It increases blood pressure and blood sugar, and reduces immune responses.

Roles Classification
Biological Roles:
human metabolite  Any mammalian metabolite produced during a metabolic reaction in humans (Homo sapiens).
mouse metabolite  Any mammalian metabolite produced during a metabolic reaction in a mouse (Mus musculus).
drug allergen  Any drug which causes the onset of an allergic reaction.
hormone  Originally referring to an endogenous compound that is formed in specialized organ or group of cells and carried to another organ or group of cells, in the same organism, upon which it has a specific regulatory function, the term is now commonly used to include non-endogenous, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic analogues of such compounds.
Applications:
anti-allergic agent  A drug used to treat allergic reactions.
anti-asthmatic drug  A drug used to treat asthma.
drug allergen  Any drug which causes the onset of an allergic reaction.
anti-inflammatory drug  A substance that reduces or suppresses inflammation.
