DefinitionOrganic heterohexacyclic compounds that are diterpenoid trilactones found in the ginkgo tree (also known as the maidenhair tree, Ginkgo biloba). They have a cage skeleton consisting of six 5-membered rings (a spiro[4.4]nonane carbobicyclic ring, three lactones and a tetrahydrofuran ring) which includes a tert-butyl substituent. The ginkolides vary only in the number and positions of their hydroxy substituents.
