About

The Web Development team manages the EMBL-EBI’s corporate websites and provides user experience (UX) and web development assistance for various EMBL-EBI tools, data resources, and other project sites where the institute actively collaborates.

Team’s key responsibilities are ensuring efficient content delivery, offering hosting services, and providing ongoing maintenance support for websites throughout EMBL. The team contributes significantly to maintaining a centralised content delivery platform for corporate content and plays a vital role in shaping EMBL’s cohesive brand identity by offering a design component library specifically tailored to scientific requirements.

Team Activities

Designing, developing and operating content websites

The team designs, develops and maintains core EMBL-EBI websites such as the corporate EMBL-EBI website, the Intranet, Training portals, Industry partnerships website and the Data Protection Engine, that are integrated with a Content Management System (CMS) for easy editing and handling of the content. The Web Development team works in collaboration with other teams, as well as developing and maintaining external websites for projects, consortia and scientific tools.

The team has achieved significant milestones with projects including the Covid-19 Data Portal, Pathogens Portal, INSDC website, and the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database project, with contributions encompassing various aspects of development, user research, and design activities.

Providing UX consultancy and training

The team provides UX and Web Design support to the organisation through services such as user research, design consultancy, and usability testing.

Developing common components, guidance, and platforms

We actively contribute to the Visual Framework design system, which is instrumental in delivering a unified EMBL brand identity. The commitment lies in creating user-centric web solutions that enhance the overall experience for stakeholders.

Strategic IT Service Management (ITSM) Framework Implementation

The ServiceNow implementation team is responsible for the ServiceNow platform, which delivers crucial IT service support to all users at EMBL-EBI. This team works collaboratively with the teams in IT & Technical Services, strategically implementing the IT Service Management (ITSM) framework. The aim is to ensure streamlined IT services and support, aligning with organisational goals and standards.
