Description of mechanism
Often, heme is bound to a protein, which acts as a electron carrier substrate in the reaction. Mostly, the iron alone absorbs the electron changes. In mechanism 3 however, the porphyrin ring system formally lacks one electron and therefore exists in a radical state [6].
