DefinitionWater-soluble UV-absorbing secondary metabolites characterized by a cyclohexenone or cycloheximine chromophore conjugated with the nitrogen substituents of amino acids or their imino alcohols. They typically have absorption maxima ranging from 309 to 360 nm and an average molecular weight of around 300. They occur in taxonomically diverse organisms.
