DefinitionAn elemental molecule with formula O3. An explosive, pale blue gas (b.p. −112°C) that has a characteristic, pungent odour, it is continuously produced in the upper atmosphere by the action of solar ultraviolet radiation on atmospheric oxygen. It is an antimicrobial agent used in the production of bottled water, as well as in the treatment of meat, poultry and other foodstuffs.

Roles Classification
Chemical Roles:
oxidising agent  A substance that removes electrons from another reactant in a redox reaction.
electrophilic reagent  A reagent that forms a bond to its reaction partner (the nucleophile) by accepting both bonding electrons from that reaction partner.
greenhouse gas  A gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiation within the thermal infrared range, so contributing to the 'greenhouse effect'.
Biological Roles:
disinfectant  An antimicrobial agent that is applied to non-living objects to destroy harmful microorganisms or to inhibit their activity.
mutagen  An agent that increases the frequency of mutations above the normal background level, usually by interacting directly with DNA and causing it damage, including base substitution.
Applications:
electrophilic reagent  A reagent that forms a bond to its reaction partner (the nucleophile) by accepting both bonding electrons from that reaction partner.
tracer  A role played by a foreign substance mixed with or attached to a given substance to enable the distribution or location of the latter to be determined subsequently.
antiseptic drug  A substance used locally on humans and other animals to destroy harmful microorganisms or to inhibit their activity (cf. disinfectants, which destroy microorganisms found on non-living objects, and antibiotics, which can be transported through the lymphatic system to destroy bacteria within the body).
