Trainer biographies
Razan Abbara
Razan joined EMBL-EBI in April 2026 as a Training Specialist for the AlphaFold Database (AFDB). Her work focuses on developing a training strategy to ensure equitable global access to resources that support the use of the rich data available through AFDB and PDBe. In addition to training, she leads engagement and outreach activities with the global scientific community. Razan earned her PhD in Microbiology from Kingston University London, where she investigated the evolution of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), focusing on how different mutations alter protein structures and drive AMR evolution. She continued her research as a postdoctoral associate at Kingston University London, studying AMR dissemination in complex biofilms.

Sara Chuguransky
Sara is the Senior biocurator of InterPro and Pfam databases at EMBL-EBI, where she checks the accuracy of the biological information included, keeping both databases up to date. In the case of Pfam, she also creates new families and domains to expand proteins and domains coverage. She has also joined the training team in 2021 and delivered training in different EBI courses. She graduated as a biochemist from the UNLP (Argentina) and continued with a PhD in diabetes associated bone disease using animal models and cell cultures. Previously joining the EMBL-EBI, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the UNLP with a CONICET fellowship, working in in silico models for anti-epileptic drug repurposing.

Cristian Escobar
Cristian joined EMBL-EBI in November 2023 as a Scientific Database Curator for the Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe). His work focuses on the annotation of macromolecular three-dimensional structures submitted to the PDB. In addition to curation, he contributes to the development of new features that enhance data accessibility and utility for the scientific community. He is also involved in training activities that showcase PDBe’s diverse resources for exploring the extensive collection of macromolecular structures. Cristian earned his PhD in Biophysics from Florida State University, where he investigated membrane proteins from Mycobacterium tuberculosis using NMR spectroscopy. He continued his research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, studying RNA structure and protein-RNA interactions.

Fábio Madeira
Fabio Madeira is Technical Project Lead Software Engineer at the EMBL-EBI and his work focus on providing core Bioinformatics Sequence Analysis Applications available through the EMBL-EBI website, as well as through reliable Web Services. Fabio is also involved in bioinformatics training and external user support. Before joining EMBL-EBI, Fabio worked under the supervision of Professor Geoff Barton at the University of Dundee, where he obtained a PhD in Computational Biology and worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher. His work focused on the development of new methods to predict 14-3-3-binding proteins, on the characterisation of genetic variants in protein families and interaction interfaces, and later on Bioinformatics Web Services.

Daniel Rice
Daniel Rice is a senior software engineer in the UniProt web development team at EBI. Previous to this he worked at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in medical genomics.
