Introduction
How is the course set up?
As you can see from the programme, there is a mixture of live-streamed sessions and practicals with live support from trainers.
Applications
| Slack | To communicate outside of the live sessions and during group work time we will use Slack. Please read the Slack help sheet for more information. |
| Zoom | Zoom will be used for our live lecture and check-ins. Please arrive at least five minutes before the session starts. Make sure your screen name is your actual name as you registered for the course (no nicknames please). If you are having trouble connecting, take a look at the Zoom help sheet. The slack channel #technical-support is also available for you to ask for help. Please mute yourself when joining to avoid feedback. The trainers will let you know how best to ask questions during the session. Zoom breakout rooms will be used during some sessions. The trainers will explain more about how this will work and how to ask for help. |
| Google Docs | Google docs are often used for group editing, particularly for the group projects. This handbook will provide you with links to any Google Docs you may need. |
| Google Colab notebook | A cloud-based service that allows you to write and execute Python code directly in your web browser. This notebook will be used for some practical session in this course. Learn more about Google colab here. |
Where can I ask questions?
- Post any questions that arise while working through the preparation material to the Course community document
- The trainers will let you know how best to ask questions during the session
- Research-related questions can be direct messaged to trainers, although there is no guarantee they will answer them. They will not write your thesis for you, but they will help you if they can
- If you have any problems with accessing the course, please post them to the #technical-support Slack channel, which will be monitored by the team throughout the course (09:00 – 17:00). If you can’t access slack, you can email Barbara
Our advice for making the most of this course
- Turn off all other internet-using devices
- Embrace the community. There are many other trainees on this course who want to start using bioinformatics in their research, so do reach out to them
Participant expectations and course certificates
Participants are expected to attend all sessions. In order to receive a certificate of attendance, you must attend a minimum of 85% of the course. Exceptions may be made in exceptional circumstances at the course organisers’ discretion.
