The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of the terminal 1,2-linked alpha-D-mannose residues in oligo-mannose oligosaccarides. It plays a critical role in the maturation of Asn-linked glycoproteins and triggers the signal for degradation of misfolded glycoproteins. It binds an essential calcium ion (PMID10995765).
