"study-abstract": "16S rRNA gene sequencing to compare the oral microbial profiles in community dwelling adults with those residing in healthcare environments that are known to have high epidemiologic risk for pneumonia (i.e., nursing home residents, and mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care units). Our goal was to determine if there was an association between the oral microbial profile and subsequent development of pneumonia. Using sterile cotton applicators, oral cavity samples were obtained and pooled for each subject from the anterior and posterior gingival crevice of each tooth, buccal mucosa, tongue, and the soft and hard palate. Using sterile cotton applicators, oral cavity samples were obtained with two swabs from the: 1) anterior and posterior gingival crevice of each tooth; and 2) buccal mucosa, tongue, and the soft and hard palate.",
