DefinitionReactive Black 5 is a synthetic, water-soluble bis-azo textile dye belonging to the class of reactive azo dyes. It contains two azo (–N=N–) linkages connecting substituted aromatic rings and is functionalized with reactive vinyl sulfone groups that enable covalent bonding with hydroxyl groups of cellulose fibers under alkaline conditions. Due to the presence of sulfonate groups, it exhibits high aqueous solubility. Reactive Black 5 is widely used in the dyeing of cotton and other cellulosic textiles and is recognized as an environmentally persistent organic pollutant due to its recalcitrance and potential to form aromatic amine degradation products under reductive conditions.
