DefinitionA bioactive polypeptide of 39 amino acid residues isolated from the saliva of the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum). High-affinity glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist (Kd = 136 pM); potently induces cAMP formation without stimulating amylase release in pancreatic acini; potentiates glucose-induced insulin secretion in isolated rat islets; protects against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity. A synthetic version is called exenatide.

Roles Classification
Chemical Role:
Bronsted base  A molecular entity capable of accepting a hydron from a donor (Brønsted acid).
Biological Roles:
incretin mimetic  Any compound that mimics the action of incretins, gastrointestinal hormones that cause an increase in the amount of insulin released from the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans after eating, even before blood glucose levels become elevated.
glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist  An agonist that binds to and activates glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors.
Application:
hypoglycemic agent  A drug which lowers the blood glucose level.
