Stars
DefinitionA benzothiadiazine that is the S,S-dioxide of 2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine which is substituted at position 3 by a methyl group and at position 7 by chlorine. A peripheral vasodilator, it increases the concentration of glucose in the plasma and inhibits the secretion of insulin by the β- cells of the pancreas. It is used orally in the management of intractable hypoglycaemia and intravenously in the management of hypertensive emergencies.

Roles Classification
Biological Roles:
K-ATP channel agonist  A compound which acts as an agonist at the ATP-sensitive K+ channel.
sympathomimetic agent  A drug that mimics the effects of stimulating postganglionic adrenergic sympathetic nerves. Included in this class are drugs that directly stimulate adrenergic receptors and drugs that act indirectly by provoking the release of adrenergic transmitters.
beta-adrenergic agonist  An agent that selectively binds to and activates β-adrenergic receptors.
sodium channel blocker  An agent that inhibits sodium influx through cell membranes.
Applications:
sympathomimetic agent  A drug that mimics the effects of stimulating postganglionic adrenergic sympathetic nerves. Included in this class are drugs that directly stimulate adrenergic receptors and drugs that act indirectly by provoking the release of adrenergic transmitters.
bronchodilator agent  An agent that causes an increase in the expansion of a bronchus or bronchial tubes.
beta-adrenergic agonist  An agent that selectively binds to and activates β-adrenergic receptors.
cardiotonic drug  A drug that has a strengthening effect on the heart or that can increase cardiac output.
antihypertensive agent  Any drug used in the treatment of acute or chronic vascular hypertension regardless of pharmacological mechanism.
vasodilator agent  A drug used to cause dilation of the blood vessels.
diuretic  An agent that promotes the excretion of urine through its effects on kidney function.
