DefinitionAn iron oxide of nanoparticulate size and poor crystallinity. It is a mineral commonly found in soil and freshwater environments and forms a core structural component in the Fe-buffering ferritin protein. It is also used in the sequestration of heavy element contaminants, and is a precursor of haematite and goethite.
