Accessing and searching the database

The AlphaFold Database offers several ways to access the data, from a user-friendly website to programmatic methods for large-scale analysis. The method you choose will depend on your specific needs and the scale of your project.

Four ways to access predicted protein structures in the AFDB. Clockwise from top left: website, API, BigQuery, FTP download.

Which method to use to access the data?

  • Access via the website: If you only need to access AFDB occasionally, using the website may be the best option. The site is easy to use and does not require any coding experience.
  • Programmatic access (API): If you need to customise the way you access the AFDB by using the API
  • BigQuery: This is similar to the programmatic access and allows for complex and customised SQL queries of the data.
  • Bulk downloads (FTP): If you need to download big datasets, such as proteomes, FTP is likely to be your best option.

If you need to download the entire collection, you can do so using the Google Cloud Public Data.
