Building your team competencies

A competency is an observable ability of any professional, which can be defined as a combination of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Frameworks outline competencies required for professionals in a specific field.

The Competency Hub is a useful resource that presents a range of competency frameworks related to a variety of bioinformatics careers. There are also example career profiles which suggest competencies for anyone in that type of role. This can help to identify roles and competencies you require in your group, as well as training individuals may need to complete.

ISCB competencies
A3: Work at depth in at least one technical area aligned with the life sciences
B3: Prepare life science data for computational analysis

To help you identify competencies that EMLB-EBI training contributes to, each training course has a Competencies tab which identifies relevant competencies from a related framework:

Review the ISCB framework to identify which types of knowledge, skills and attitudes are included, and which example careers profiles may be relevant to your team.

In the final section of this collection we will have a quick look at the types of computational infrastructure you may have available.
