Introduction to Pfam and InterPro

Trainers: Typhaine Paysan-Lafosse, Sara Chuguransky

Overview: In the first part of the Sequence classification lecture, we will explore the Pfam database, its features and functionalities, and the information that can be found to assist your work. This lecture will also include an introduction to the InterPro resource, cover the different searches available in the InterPro website and give insights on how to interpret the data displayed.

Learning Outcomes:

After this session you should be able to

  • Summarize the purpose of Pfam and InterPro in protein classification and how they may be useful in your research.
  • Recall the different protein model algorithms
  • Execute different types of search in the Pfam and InterPro websites
  • Interpret the information available on the Pfam and InterPro entry pages
  • Produce a summary of the results obtained when analysing a protein sequence using Pfam and InterProScan
