Metabolite Identification

Trainer: Elena Chekmeneva

Overview: Assigning chemical identity to the thousands of analytical signals measured by modern metabolic profiling platforms is the principal bottleneck of the metabolomics field. Without knowledge of the structure of discovered metabolic biomarkers, the link is missing between otherwise mature analytical technologies and downstream biological interpretation of the data they produce.

The aim of this lecture is to provide an introduction to metabolite identification process explaining why we need to do it, why it can be so challenging, and how we can achieve successful results. This lecture will introduce the tools, databases, and techniques that can be used for metabolite annotation and identification and will demonstrate some useful examples.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this lecture you will be able to:

  • Describe metabolite identification process
  • Identify tools and resources for metabolite annotation and identification
