The PDB has just released their new format document, and among the changes is the use of a segment identifier "to identify specific segments of the molecule." This had been proposed since March, and seems now to be firm. In order to ensure smooth conversion between formats and to handle a concept used by X-PLOR, it would seem useful to define an equivalent token in mmCIF.
