"text": "<p>In bacteria there are a number of families of transport proteins that mediate\nthe intake of a variety of sugars with the concomitant uptake of hydrogen\nions (proton symporters) [[cite:PUB00005398]]. One of these families is composed [[cite:PUB00003754]] of the\nfollowing proteins:\n\n - Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae lactose permease (gene lacY)\n which are responsible for the transport of beta-galactosides into the cell.\n - Escherichia coli plasmid pRsd2 raffinose permease (gene rafB).\n - Escherichia coli sucrose permease (gene cscB).\n\nThese integral membrane proteins are predicted to comprise twelve membrane\nspanning domains. As signature patterns we selected two conserved regions\nthat both correspond to cytoplasmic loops: between the second and third\ntransmembrane regions for the first pattern and between the eight and ninth\nfor the second pattern.</p>",
