Reporting missing values

BioSamples recommends to use not collected, not provided and restricted access terms for reporting missing values when attribute-values can not be included in a submission. Following table list down recommended terms and their description.

Value Definition

not collected

Information was not given because it has not been collected, and will always be missing.

not provided

Information may have been collected but was not provided with the submission. It may be added later.

restricted access

Information exists, but can not be released openly because of privacy concerns.

All the other missing values that do not fall into any of the above recommended categories, should be removed from the submission. If they are provided, they will be removed using automatic curations. These values include n/a, na, n.a, none, unknown, --, ., null, missing, not reported, not requested, not applicable, not specified, not known.
