Sustainability of workflows

As workflows depend on many small parts to all be working as expected, any minor change, such as a change in URL or a change in version of a tool where the version to use was not specified, can cause the workflow to be unusable. For workflows to be usable they must be sustained and regularly tested to ensure they work completely. Frequent testing can highlight any problems as they arise so they can be solved quickly and the functionality of the workflow maintained.

To improve sustainability, tools such as LifeMonitor, developed as part of EOSC-Life, can be used.

LifeMonitor uses long-term periodic testing and workflow analysis to support the sustainability and reusability of published computational workflows. It is also integrated with the registry WorkflowHub to assist with sustainability of workflows listed in the registry.9
