Sharing your data

Following your own research, you may have data that is suitable for submission to a data resource. There are some tools to help you identify which data resource may be suitable for your submission, such as the EMBL-EBI data submission wizard which asks you some questions to determine the most suitable EMBL-EBI resource (figure 10).

Use the data submission wizard to find the right archive for your data in a few simple steps.
Why submit data to an archive?
Submission of primary data and derived information to public data repositories is an essential step in the scientific process.
Through submission, the scientific community is fed the raw materials for the building and maintenance of the complete and up-to-date data sets that support searches and analysis on the latest sequences, structures and molecular profiles of living systems.
Serving as a complement to the literature publication process and supporting early data sharing, the EMBL-EBI offers a number of submission services appropriate for different types and scales of data.

Talking to the resource’s biocurators can be a great place to start. They can usually be contacted via a resource’s helpdesk or ‘contact us’ page.

Biocurators are scientists who extract, interpret, combine and archive data from a variety of sources, such as literature and author-provided materials. They standardise the data and make it machine readable, more discoverable and accessible to the public.

Biocurators are also available to help you discover what data you can submit to their resource and how you can do so.

When thinking about submitting data it is good to start planning as soon as possible so you can think about necessary data management, such as data structure and any required data standards.
