Data standards

Data standards are needed to describe data in a way that can be accessed, read and retrieved by every other member of your scientific communities, as well as computers.

Data standards can include:

  • Data formats – specific ways of structuring data or use of certain files types
  • Controlled vocabularies and ontologies
  • Reporting guidelines or minimum reporting checklists
  • Unique identifiers for data that are persistent, unique and resolvable
