Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) – The transfer of genetic material between organisms that are not in a parent-offspring relationship
Plasmid – An extrachromosomal DNA molecule within a cell that can replicate independently and may be transferred to other microorganisms
Vector – A living organism that can transmit pathogens from an infected individual to a non-infected individual. For example, some species of mosquito are vectors as they can carry parasites within their bodies and can transmit them to humans through biting.
Microbiome – A community of microorganisms that live in a particular environment.
