What is the IMPC?

The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) is a collaborative effort involving 21 research institutions worldwide (figure 1), with the aim of identifying the function of every protein-coding gene in the mouse genome.

To achieve this, the IMPC is systematically switching off or ‘knocking out’ each of the approximately 20,000 genes in the mouse genome. The resulting knockout mice then undergo standardised phenotyping tests across various biological systems to help infer gene functions. The data collected from these tests is freely accessible to the research community on the IMPC website at mousephenotype.org. For more information about the IMPC, explore our introductory IMPC tutorial.

There are 21 research institutes around the world that produce data for the IMPC.
