Trusted research environments

For some data, such as health-related data, keeping it secure is vital to protect the privacy of those whose data it is. In such scenarios, trusted research environments (TREs) can be used to access and analyse the data all in one computational environment, without the need for researchers to download data onto their own computers.

By using TREs, those responsible for the data can ensure that only specific people can access it, only certain tools can be used to analyse the data and it must be connected to in a secure way. Using TREs also means that the analysis is done in a way that has already been approved.3

In the following video (7:14) from HDR UK, Utkarsh Agrawal, Research Fellow (Data Scientist), University of St. Andrews and HDR UK Scotland, and Fatemeh Torabi, Research Officer and Data Scientist at HDR UK Wales/NI at Swansea University, discuss:

  • the complexities of working with patient data
  • working in TREs

This video was produced and provided by HDR UK, to learn more about health data science access the learning platform HDR UK Futures.
