Historical perspectives on plant science databases

Exploring the history of data management in the plant sciences can potentially help researchers recognise and navigate contemporary challenges.

This webinar with Helen Anne Curry, Georgia Institute of Technology, recorded on 3 May 2023, discusses the history of database development in the plant sciences, with a focus on European efforts to build international, cross-institutional genebank databases. Although accounts of these often focus on the need for well curated and cross-linked databases to adequately serve research communities, it is equally important to consider the political and economic motivations behind database development.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the video you will be able to:

  • Take a historical perspective on the multiple purposes served by the creation of data infrastructures
  • Recognise the historical role of genebank management in driving international, cross-institution database development in the plant sciences

This was the last section of the collection, continue on to the remaining pages to try out the collection challenge and for suggested further learning.
