Data management plans

A data management plan (DMP) is a tool that helps you think about what is going to happen to your data during and after a project.

It will help you to not lose data, guide your group in managing their data, adhere to requirements from funders, submit data to publicly available resources, and find data from projects after they are finished. It will also help you think about things you wouldn’t otherwise think of but will make your project easier!

A DMP will:

  • provide an overview of the data that will be collected during a project
  • identify data storage and backup plans
  • identify what needs to be recorded in documentation
  • provide an overview of data preservation through storage and submission plans

A DMP is a living document; it can be edited and updated as the project progresses.

DMP tools

There are tools available online, such as DMPOnline (figure 2), which help you create a DMP – they ask the right questions so you don’t have to. There are also example DMPs to give you an idea about how others write theirs.

DMPonline helps you to create, review, and share data management plans that meet institutional and funder requirements.
Figure 3 DMPOnline is an online tool to help create DMPs.

Now go to DMPOnline and review a template or example DMP.
