Computational resources

Different types of bioinformatics analyses will require different types of computational resource. it is important that your group has access to compute infrastructure that is suitable for the research undertaken. Also, as we saw from the data management section, it is important to consider how data will be backed up.

Computational resources may be as simple as laptops or PCs, but it also includes possibilities such as servers, cloud compute, or supercomputers.

An important first step is to find out what computational infrastructure your institute already has available for you to use. For example, there may be an HPC (high performance computer) you have access to. This may be referred to as an HPC, but it may have other names such as Research computing or Scientific clusters. It is a good idea to ask around to learn more and if there are such resources available to you, there will be people to help, such as systems administrators.
