Biocuration in industry

Biocurators work in various academic and non-profit institutes. International biocuration hubs include EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), the Wellcome Sanger Institute, and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB). However, biocuration roles and similar positions also exist in industry.

Watch this short video of Rachael Huntley, who worked as a biocurator in academia before she became a Senior Scientific Curator at SciBite, to learn about her role and the skills she could transfer from academia to her job in industry. In the video, she also points out differences and similarities between academic and industrial biocuration projects.

There are many roles in academia that are not identical with the classical profile of a biocurator from academia, but that offer the opportunity to transfer many of the skills that one has developed in the role of a biocurator. The final section of the video includes an overview from George Georghiou, who started his biocuration career at EMBL-EBI and now works as an Information Manager at Novartis, about what’s involved in his current role.

This video clip was taken from a longer webinar in which Rachel and George talk further about their roles in industry. It’s available to watch now: Biocuration in industry.

Outside of industry, many biocurators work for publicly available data resources, learn more about what these are in the next section.
