Sequence similarity search for biomolecular sequences
Sequence similarity search is a method of searching sequence databases by using alignment to a query sequence. This method can help to identify homology and function of a query sequence by finding database sequences which are significantly similar to the query sequence.
This webinar with Nandana Madhusoodanan (Helpdesk and Documentation Officer, EMBL-EBI), recorded on 09 June 2021, introduces basic concepts in sequence similarity search with a focus on the similarity search tools and databases provided by EMBL-EBI, and includes useful tips on which tools and databases to use, and explore some examples of use cases using BLAST.
By the end of this webinar you will be able to:
- Describe what sequence similarity searching is and why it is important
- Identify sequence search tools and biological databases at EMBL-EBI
- Perform BLAST sequence searches against different EMBL-EBI databases
- Explore different input formats, different parameters options, and how to interpret the results
