Why do we need ChEMBL?

ChEMBL is a ‘chemogenomic’ database that brings together chemical, bioactivity and genomic data to aid the translation of genomic information into effective new drugs. It is therefore of interest to drug discovery researchers in large pharmaceutical companies, as well as small companies and academic institutions.

ChEMBL stores over 35 years' worth of data in its database and makes it freely accessible to anyone. You can use it to search on protein targets, specific assays, compounds of interest and even search for certain cell lines. Not only do we store this data, we also link out to, and in some cases store the data of, many other useful external resources. These include: UniProtcanSar and PDBe. It's as though there are many useful resources under one ChEMBL roof (Figure 2)!
