Introduction to macromolecular structure at the PDBe

Module length: Half day
EBI topics: Structures , Proteins
Resources covered: Protein Data Bank in Europe, PDBePISA

This module offers participants an overview and hands-on experience of exploring 3D macromolecular structure data in the Protein Data Bank (PDB). PDBe, a founding member of the wwPDB, offers a number of tools to better understand the data in the archive, some of which will be introduced here.

The module is aimed at researchers interested in protein structures, protein-ligand interactions and related areas. No prior experience of bioinformatics is required, but an undergraduate level knowledge of molecular biology would be of benefit to those attending.

Learning outcomes

After this course participants should be able to:

  • Search, retrieve and assess the quality of structural data from the PDB archive to find the best structure for your needs.
  • Visualise and analyse structures, including viewing annotations to extend knowledge of the molecule of interest.
  • View protein-ligand interactions and identify structurally similar proteins.
