Introduction

How is the course set up?

As you can see from the programme, there is a mixture of live-streamed sessions, pre-recorded lectures and group work with live support from trainers and mentors.

Applications

SlackTo communicate outside of live sessions and during group work time we will use Slack. Please read the Slack help sheet for more information.
ZoomZoom will be used for our live lectures, challenges and check-ins.
Please arrive at least 5 minutes before the session starts.
Make sure your screen name is your actual name as you registered for the course (no nicknames please).
If you are having trouble connecting, take a look at the Zoom help sheet. The Slack channel #technical_support is also available for you to ask for help.
Please mute yourself when joining to avoid feedback. The trainers will let you know how best to ask questions during the session.
Zoom breakout rooms will be used during some sessions. The trainers will explain more about how this will work and how to ask for help.
Gather TownWe will use Gather Town for the poster sessions. You will be able to create an avatar and move around the environment, chat with others, and even interact with objects in the scene.
Google DocsGoogle docs are often used for group editing, particularly for the group projects. This handbook will provide you with links to any Google Docs you may need.
Virtual machines (VMs)Virtual machines are used for practical work. You will receive details about how to log in and when to test logging in. Please read the Virtual machines help sheet for more information.

Where can I ask questions?

  • Post any questions that arise while working through the preparation material to the Questions and answers document
  • The trainers will let you know how best to ask questions during the session
  • Ask your questions that arise during the projects in the respective #project- Slack channel
  • Research-related questions can be direct messaged to trainers, although there is no guarantee they will answer them. They will not write your thesis for you, but they will help you if they can.
  • If you have any problems with accessing the course, please post them to the #technical_support Slack channel, which will be monitored by the team throughout the course (09:00-17:00). If you can’t access Slack, you can email Juanita.

Our advice for making the most of this course

  • Turn off all other internet-using devices
  • Embrace the community. There are many other trainees on this course who want to start using bioinformatics in their research, so do reach out to them
