Project management – approaches and tools
Trainers: Urmi Trivedi
Overview: Project management in bioinformatics core services can be demanding as we can get a wide variety of projects in all shapes and sizes. Regardless of this, as managers, it is our responsibility to lay a clear organisation of the project by setting the right scope, manage communication with our users and multiple teams; make sure right resources are assigned to the project and ultimately, the project is finished in the promised time frame. In this interactive session, the group discussed some key project management practices, how they apply this to projects, and how to use project management practices to accelerate learning in their teams.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify key elements of bioinformatics project management
- Explore different project management methods which can be applied to bioinformatics projects
- Explain project management as primarily a communication-between-people activity
- Describe the challenges and successes your peers have had with project management
- Make use of some key project management communication tools, both synchronous (meetings) and asynchronous (documents)
- Craft processes from those tools which facilitate learning from projects your team performs
