Binning and MAG generation: lecture

Trainer: Tatiana Gurbich

Overview:  This section will introduce the process of binning and MAG generation. The talk will cover binning, assessment of completeness and contamination, bin refinement, dereplication of genomes, taxonomic classification, generation of MAG catalogs, and some considerations for eukaryotic genomes. A published catalog of MAGs from the human gut microbiome will be used to illustrate the application of these processes.

Learning outcomes

After this session you should be able to:

  • Identify the usefulness of MAGs
  • Identify the main algorithms employed to generate MAGs
  • Perform assessment of MAG quality, taxonomic assignment, and dereplication of MAGs across samples
  • Use MAGs to create the Unified Human Gastrointestinal Genome (UHGG) collection
