Graphic design principles for data visualisation

Overview: The session will cover design basics of colour, typography, flow, and principles of balance, proximity, contrast, and emphasis. We will look at how to simplify visuals to improve readability and what to consider to make visuals accessible. In the context of scientific research, we will look at ways to improve slide and poster design, and how to adapt content to be shared further. The session will include tips on tools to use and examples of great design along the way.

  • Describe core design principles, such as colour, typography, contrast, and layout, to create clear and accessible scientific visuals
  • Identify strategies to enhance the accessibility of your scientific materials, including simplifying visuals and using inclusive design practices.
