Gene Ontology

Trainers: Antonia Lock

Overview: The Gene Ontology (GO) resource is the world’s most comprehensive source of information about the function of gene products (proteins and non-coding RNAs). The GO consists of two main components: an ontology of terms that describe biological phenomena and annotations that connect gene products to ontology terms. In addition, an array of tools are available to help make use of GO in analyses. This session provides an overview of the Gene Ontology structure, how annotations are created, and outline some methods used in GO analysis.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Explain what the gene ontology is, its structure and its limitations
  • Access and make use of GO annotations
