Introduction to pangenomes and why they are worth exploring

Pangenomes offer an alternative approach to using a singular linear reference genome, which is becoming increasingly important as both the volume and diversity of genomic data grows rapidly. However, transitioning to pangenomics also brings along new terminology and challenges (both biological and computational!), all of which are less clearly defined than in the conventional linear reference world. Here, we'll attempt to define some key differences in pangenomics and how they can improve future genomic analyses.

Who is this course for?

This webinar is suitable for students, biologists, bioinformaticians and researchers interested in learning about pangenomics. No prior knowledge of the field is required, but an undergraduate level of biology would be helpful.

This event is part of a broader webinar series exploring concepts, methods and resources in pangenomics. For more information about the series and its webinars, please visit the following link: "Concepts, methods and resources in pangenomics".

Outcomes

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Define what a pangenome is and distinguish it from conventional linear reference genomes.
  • Explain the biological and computational motivations for using pangenomes.
  • Discuss the opportunities and challenges of using pangenomics in future research.
