Exploring large-scale proteomics data in UniProt

UniProt is a comprehensive, expert-led, publicly available database of protein sequence, function and variation information. It also encompasses a wealth of large-scale proteomics data, resources and tools that users from the proteomics community can benefit from.

This webinar will introduce proteomics data in UniProt and highlight resources that users with large protein datasets may find useful in analysing their data. This will encompass our proteomes service and where to find large scale proteomics-derived data in UniProt.

The webinar will then go on to briefly introduce programmatic access to the UniProt Proteins API and will give examples on how to download reference proteomes, and download large-scale proteomics datasets programmatically.

Finally the speakers will take live questions from the audience.

Attendees will have access to a Google Colab workbook following the webinar which will provide Python coding examples that they can use in their own analysis pipelines.

The UniProt APIs are available at: https://www.uniprot.org/help/programmatic_access

Who is this course for?

This webinar is aimed at computational and wet-lab scientists with an interest in large-scale proteomics data. No prior knowledge of programming is required however the final 10 mins of the webinar will introduce programmatic access using Python. An undergraduate level knowledge of protein biology will be useful.

Users that would like a beginners introduction to UniProt programmatic access should view the webinar ‘Accessing UniProt programmatically for students’.

For those already familiar with programming languages that require a more detailed explanation of accessing UniProt programmatically please see the webinar ‘Programmatic access to UniProt using Python.’

This webinar is not designed to be a general introduction to the UniProt resources or to address context-specific research problems. Please see the webinar ‘A guide to UniProt for students’ for a general introduction to our resources and tools. For more problem-specific help or context-specific queries please use the ‘contact us’ link or green ‘help’ tab on our webpages to contact the UniProt team.

Outcomes

By the end of the webinar you will be able to:

  • Find and explore the UniProt services useful for proteomics scientists or users with large-scale protein datasets.
  • Access proteomics data using the UniProt Proteins API programmatically
