Virtual course

Bioinformatics tools and data retrieval

The Job Dispatcher service at the EMBL-EBI provides access to various sequence analysis tools and a database retrieval system (Dbfetch).

This virtual course is split into two sessions running over two days.

During the first session, you will learn how to access and use our sequence analysis tools (Eg: NCBI BLAST+, Clustal Omega, EMBOSS); and retrieve various database entries at the EMBL-EBI using Dbfetch. This session will also explain how to use sequence alignment and search effectively to find relevant results.

The second session focuses on alternative ways to access these services beyond the website. This session will introduce the Job Dispatcher RESTful API, show how to access our tools programmatically, and integrate them into workflows

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for anyone interested in learning about sequence analysis tools and related datasets. No prior experience in bioinformatics is required, but an undergraduate-level understanding of biology is recommended.

For those who wish to attend session two on programmatic access, prior knowledge of command line or programming would be beneficial.

Please provide your attendance preferences for each or both sessions as a part of the application process.

What will I learn?

Learning outcomes

After this course, you should be able to:

  • Access and explore sequence analysis tools in Job Dispatcher
  • Explore the biological databases available for sequence similarity search tools.
  • Use Dbfetch to retrieve data entries from various databases at EMBL-EBI
  • Access the bioinformatics tools via the web and programmatic interfaces
  • Identify how to incorporate Job Dispatcher tools into your workflow using command-line tools and/or workflows
