Applications of artificial intelligence for biosciences in Latin America

This webinar series builds on a newly developed curriculum on concepts, approaches, and applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in biosciences. The series explores how AI and machine learning are being applied to biosciences research across Latin America. Researchers from Costa Rica, Argentina, and Mexico will share their experiences working with AI tools (such as AlphaFold), and discuss their applications in various fields, including biomedicine, metagenomics, and agriculture.  

This webinar series is part of the BiotrAIn project, a collaboration between University of Costa RicaCABANAnet and EMBL-EBI, funded by the Chan Zuckerberg initiative. 

A bilingual series
This webinar series includes two webinars delivered in English and three in Spanish. For each webinar, captions in English and Spanish will be provided. All automatically generated captions will be reviewed by bilingual experts in the field, unless stated otherwise.

Who is this series for?

This webinar series is intended for students, researchers, and professionals in biological sciences who are interested in leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches for bioscience. It will be of particular interest to participants based in Latin America, as well as to those interested in engaging or collaborating with that community.
 

Outcomes

After completing the webinar series, you will be able to:

  • Identify the objectives, phases, and scope of the BiotrAIn project, and describe how it promotes capacity strengthening in AI applied to life sciences in Latin America, together with the creation of an active regional community. 
  • Recognise how AI and machine learning are applied to biosciences and medical research in Latin America, with specific experiences from Costa Rica, Argentina, and Mexico. 
  • Discuss how AI algorithms are applied in the study of microbiomes, antimicrobial resistance, and epidemiological data analysis. 
  • Discuss the potential of AI to discover new therapeutic targets through protein structure modeling using AI tools such as AlphaFold. 
  • Identify strategies to analyse non-communicable disease data, such as cancer, using machine learning classification and clustering algorithms for gene expression data and biomarker discovery. 
  • Discuss how AI drives agrobiotechnological bioinformatics, integrating genomic, transcriptomic, and agronomic data to improve agricultural productivity and promote a data-driven biology-oriented toward sustainability.
